Well, the oral cavity takes an awful lot of insults. We put things in our mouths and we have components of our food that can affect the bacterial population that's there and can affect the tissues.
We know from the prevalence of oral diseases and how frequently people have gum problems, swollen gums, poorly circulated tissues, bleeding points, all the signs we frequently see when someone sits in a dental chair. So there is no doubt in my mind that the benefit here is a prophylactic one to maintain oral health.
And of course the flora in your can be affected by what you take in. It can be affected by other stresses in your life. And I think what we're learning is how important that oral health is to every other system in your body. It's becoming clear that for some systemic diseases--- by that we mean diseases of the general body or internal organs and so on--- some of the problems there begin in the mouth.
And if we can maintain oral health, maintain a healthy flora, shut down the unhealthy organisms, we're going to have a good prophylactic effect.
And by the way, we're also going to have a really good effect on breath. Bad breath is also a pretty prevalent problem. And shutting down the organisms that make the malodorous chemicals is also one of the big benefits of routine use of HOCl as a rinse.
