Ep10 (full episode) -- Maskne (Mask Acne), Bleeding Gums, HOCL -- Dental Revolution: Biohacking the Mouth/Body Connection SEASON1
Nicole’s struggle with acne began when she was just 12 years old. What started as small bumps on her forehead eventually spread to her cheeks during high school, becoming progressively worse over time.
Like many teenagers and young adults dealing with chronic breakouts, she found herself trapped in a frustrating cycle of trial and error. No matter what products she used—whether over-the-counter washes, creams, or expensive treatments—nothing seemed to work on her skin.
The situation became even more challenging when Nicole started working in a dental office. As a dental assistant, she is required to wear a face mask every single day for long hours. The trapped moisture and friction caused her acne to flare up aggressively once again, an issue commonly referred to as "maskne."
However, a turning point arrived when her dental office introduced a new product for patient care: Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl). Initially brought in as an antibacterial mouth rinse to promote oral health, Nicole was intrigued by its incredibly simple, non-toxic ingredients. Deciding she had nothing to lose, she began testing the HOCl rinse on her own skin.
The results were astonishing. By simply spraying the HOCl on her face every morning and night right after washing it—using it as a daily toner—her skin cleared up beautifully. Additionally, she used it for its intended purpose as a daily mouth swish, and noticed that her bleeding gums completely stopped.
Nicole’s story is a powerful testament to how interconnected our bodily systems are, perfectly encapsulated by the episode's closing song: "When we heal the mouth, the body finds its harmony anew."

When my acne first started at 12 years old, I would get little bumps on my forehead and then it would go away. And then during high school, when high school started, that's when I started getting it on my cheeks and it progressively got worse over time and it never went away no matter what products I used like anything I would use nothing would work on me. And then when I started working at the dental office, we had to wear a mask every day. When I started wearing masks every day, that's when my acne started to develop again.
My name is Nicole. I am 22 years old. I just graduated from the dental assisting program not too long ago and I am the youngest and the only girl in my family and my background is Filipino. So when she first brought HOCl to the office, I knew nothing about it, but she told us it was an antibacterial and a good mouth rinse or you can use it on your face as well. I looked at the ingredients and it looked pretty simple. It basically really helped me with my skin overall and I'm happy she introduced us to it, but using the HOCl really helped my skin improve.
I use it every morning and night and I use it right after I wash my face and I use it as a toner. So I just spray it on my face. I use it as a swish in my mouth, too. I did have bleeding gums at first, but I noticed that it lessened that and my gums don't bleed at all anymore, actually.
